Who Needs a Food Handlers Certificate?

Many of us aren’t overly concerned with proper food-handling techniques when we’re cooking for ourselves (aside from basic food safety principles like washing hands and cooking food to proper temperature, we would hope!).

But things are different for those who handle food served to others.

From chefs and cooks to kitchen managers and restaurant managers, anyone who potentially handles food for others can benefit from a food handlers certificate. Let’s take a look at what a food handlers certificate entails, who can benefit from it and how to get one.

What is a Food Handlers Certificate?

A food handlers certificate (also known as a “food handlers card”) is required for any food service employee handling food and covers the principles of food safety. Specific certification requirements vary by state, but, for Texas at least, the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) requires that a food handlers course be taken within 60 days from the date you were hired as a food handler. These certificates/cards are valid for two years and upon expiration, another course must be completed to maintain your certification.

Who Can Benefit From a Food Handler Certificate?

Every food worker can benefit from a food handler card, but they are especially important for roles where food is cooked, served or otherwise prepared by hand. As mentioned above, a food handler card is required for any employee handling food, which includes, but is not limited to, the following professions:

  • Chefs/cooks
  • Kitchen managers (back of house)
  • Restaurant managers (front of house)
  • Food servers and bussers
  • Food truck owner or operator
  • Coffee shop, bakery or sandwich employees
  • Fast-food workers
  • Convenience and grocery store clerks
  • Pre-packaged food plants
  • Temporary food establishments
  • Any other role where food is handled (paid or unpaid)
