5 Benefits to Obtaining Your Food Handlers Card

Food has lots of benefits. It sustains us, gives us energy and makes life a little more enjoyable. But what about food handling? If you’re a server, cook or in another role that involves the handling of food, a certification or card can give you more benefits than you might think.

Whether it’s gaining valuable industry training or meeting state or company regulations, there are several benefits to obtaining your food handlers card. Let’s take a look at five of them.

  1. Food Safety

For starters, you greatly increase your knowledge about food safety with a food handlers training course. After just one or two hours (depending on your pace), you’ll learn things like how food becomes unsafe, good personal hygiene practices, proper time and temperature requirements, how to prevent cross contamination and best practices for cleaning/sanitization.

  1. Cross Training

When you get your food handlers card, you can pass on your knowledge to fellow employees and ensure everyone at your establishment is on the same page with food safety. (This also shows ownership that you’re management material.) Food handler cards expire every two years, but things can change even during that time (e.g. pandemics), so it’s important to stay sharp with your food-handling knowledge.

  1. Avoid Risks

As someone in an industry where food is served, you and your company are inherently at risk for legal and other disputes in the case of a food safety hazard or consequence. If someone gets sick from eating undercooked chicken at your restaurant, your company could be liable. This could not only spell the end of your role at the company, but potentially the company itself.

  1. Resume Value

When you have a food handlers card on your resume, it helps you stand out from other candidates who may be vying for the same position as you. In the fast-paced world of food handling, it’s more important than ever to get an edge and ensure you’re maintaining your marketability as someone who knows how to handle food properly.

  1. Job Security

Related to the point above, you also increase your job security when you have a food handlers card. Maybe it’s required by your employer, maybe not, but you can show that you’re willing to go the extra mile by doing beyond the minimum requirements.

These are just a few of the benefits of a food handlers card. If you’re interested in obtaining yours, check out our Food Handlers Certification Course and consider enrolling today!
